Composite Decking - Pros & Cons

As composite decking continues to gain popularity, here are some pros and cons that might help you decide whether it's worth the price tag.

Pros

  1. Less maintenance - composite decking is resistant to rot and therefore easier to maintain. It does not require frequent repainting or resealing as wooden decking does. It does not fade or stain, making it the ideal choice for those with pets and children.

  2. Lifespan and durability - because composite is resistant to rot, it makes it a very durable option. While wooden decking (well taken care of) lasts around 15 years, composite's durable material lasts closer to 30 years; double the lifespan.

  3. Weather resistant - where wooden decking may be weakened and discolored by extreme weather, composite can easily withstand rain, frost and high temperatures.

  4. Eco friendly choice - composite decking is made of a mixture of primarily plastic and wood. These are often sourced from recycled materials making composite an eco-friendly choice.

Cons

  1. Price - composite decking can run up to twice the price of wooden decking. However, considering that composite boasts double the lifespan, one could conclude that it would be worth the upfront investment.

  2. Scratches - while composite decking is extremely durable, it can be harder to remove scratched when surface damage occurs. Wooden decking on the other hand can be sanded down and refinished.

  3. Cannot be repainted - composite decking color is mixed into the woof fibers, plastic and bonding agents, so it can't be changed if you want a different color down the road. Make sure you choose a color that you'll love for years to come.
